Our house is Mock-Tudor 1930’s build, solid brick with a 1980’s cavity wall extension.   The loft was insulated by the previous owners.   The 1970s first floor extension had 50mm foam cavity wall insulation.

1. LOFT INSULATION £
300mm glass mineral wool loft insulation throughout the house, and insulated loft hatch.
2. CAVITY WALL INSULATION IN GARAGE ££
Wool cavity wall insulation to 1970s extension (garage) and Internal mineral glass wool ceiling insulation 150mm in the garage.  We wanted to use natural products where possible.
3. EXTERNAL INSULATION OF SOLID WALLS ££
First floor rear external wall insulation foam board 30mm.

Not all external walls are insulated.  It’s only the study and the hallway that don’t have external insulation now.
4. FIRST FLOOR NEW EXTENSION ££
1st floor new extension with cavity wall insulation 50mm insulation board.
5. NEW DOUBLE GLAZING £££
New double-glazed windows to rear of house.  Now all the windows are double-glazed or triple-glazed (see 9.).​

6. INTERNAL INSULATION £££
  • Internal insulation in upstairs bedrooms 50mm PIR board.
  • ​Downstairs front internal wall insulation 50mm PIR board to solid brick wall (double layered brick wall.

7. PREVENTING DRAUGHTS £££
Removal of chimney (to eliminate draught) and draught excluder to front room chimney.  We have a woodburner and we’ve put insulation around the woodburner liner.
8. ROOF INSULATION £££
150mm roof insulation board for new single storey extension.
9. TRIPLE GLAZING £££
Triple-glazed Velux windows.
10. UNDERFLOOR INSULATION AND HEATING ££££
Underfloor insulation (150mm board) and underfloor heating (pipes) throughout the whole ground floor.
11. SOLAR PV PANELS AND BATTERY ££££

The 14 solar PV panels are on 3 different parts of the roof facing as close to South as possible.​

BENEFITS
  • Much warmer house, much more efficiently heated, heat kept in much better.
  • It's hard for us to say the exact saving, as our demand is completely different now – we have 2 electric cars, an electric hob so we can’t compare.
  • Use of solar panels is great – reduces electricity bills.
LESSONS LEARNED
Underfloor heating is a very big job with a lot of disruption and upheaval.  We had to lay concrete first – that took about 4 weeks, then the underfloor heating was about 6 weeks until it could be turned on.  Installation time was probably about 2 weeks but 6 weeks until we could turn it on.
