10 Lime Grove Avenue, Chilwell, NG9 4AR.​
The house started as a between-the-wars semi-detached house with solid brick walls.  There is a room in the attic.  We have been here since 1975.  In the 1980s, we added a two-storey extension with insulated cavity walls and double glazed windows.

HOW TO ADD YOUR own property
FIND OTHER properties ON THE TRAIL
1. FOIL BEHIND RADIATORS £
We have tin foil behind most radiators to project heat into the room.
2. LED OR HALOGEN LIGHTS £
LED or halogen lights are fitted throughout.  Both save energy but LEDs are more efficient.​
3. COMBI BOILER £
​We have timed heating from a combi boiler, two hours in the morning and late afternoon.  On the winter evenings we wear extra clothes when necessary!

​4. NEW CARPET WITH UNDERLAY ££
​Last year we had new carpet fitted with a recycled wool carpet underlay.
5. RAINWATER COLLECTION ££
​Rainwater is collected from the gutters on the house and greenhouse and reused on the garden.

6. LOFT INSULATION £££ 
The loft has been fully insulated between the joists with blanket insulation, with timber floor boarding on top, to make a small storage room.
7. ENCLOSED PORCH £££
A porch has been added to the front door, which is self-closing.  ​

8. DOUBLE GLAZING ££££
All the windows of the extension are double glazed.
​9. SOLAR PV PANELS ££££ 
12 solar PV panels were fitted in 2014.  We took advice from the Nottingham Energy Trust, who subsequently recommended excellent installers.  Our roof was limited in the number of panels we could fit for so we put them in the back garden instead.  It faces south-west, with no shading from trees. ​

10. EXTERNAL CLADDING ££££
We had the 1920s part of the house fitted with external cladding. ​

BENEFITS
  • Both the porch and the self-closing front door  save heat within the house.
  • The external cladding made a significant difference to the warmth inside.​
  • The solar PV installation created useful storage space beneath for logs, bikes and garden tools.
PROBLEMS
​
The main problem is that the sitting room, which extends from front to back, can be cold. It only has a radiator in the front half of the room where we used to have a gas fire.  We now have a log burner in the back half, which is fine when it is in use.
​

At the garden end of the sitting room, there is an alcove with a desk.  When we were preparing to let the house, council regulations meant we had to have a ventilator made in the wall there, because the room was heated by a gas fire.  We have now replaced it with the log burner but the partially blocked ventilator still creates draughts.
